Fine Art Printmaking Inspired by Finland-Swedish Folklore

Sara Koskinen’s exhibition at the Stundars Museum is a poetic and dreamlike interpretation of Finland-Swedish storytelling traditions. Drawing from fairy tales, legends, and folklore collected in the early 20th century—now preserved in the digital archives of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland—Koskinen creates a series of fine art prints that evoke the mystery, symbolism, and imaginative power of this cultural heritage. Her works bring to life a world inhabited by supernatural beings, enchanted landscapes, and a deep reverence for nature.

Koskinen’s roots in Ostrobothnia are strongly felt in her imagery. The landscapes, colors, and memories of her childhood form the foundation of many pieces—a world where the boundary between everyday life and folklore still feels porous.

Working primarily with etching and aquatint, Koskinen's artistic practice emphasizes form, texture, and subtle color. Her nature-inspired palette enhances the quiet, contemplative mood of the works. In some prints, she incorporates dried flowers, adding a tactile and vivid layer that bridges print and natural object.

The exhibition offers a visual journey into the world of Finland-Swedish folk tradition, where Koskinen’s technical mastery meets a living, evolving storytelling culture. Through color, form, and detail, she gives new life to old tales, inviting viewers into a world where myth, memory, and the natural world are deeply intertwined.
